Hanna wasn't back in Fandom for very long before she got a few frantic voicemails and texts from her mother. This required a portal trip instead of the train. No way was she going to waste any time getting to her mother when she was in trouble.
When she stepped into the kitchen, she saw her mother sitting there in the dark, a glass of scotch in front of her. It was usually wine she'd be drinking. Scotch meant it was serious. Also, she wasn't questioning how Hanna had gotten home so fast.
"Mom, are you okay?" Hanna asked, worry in her voice.
Ashley was somewhat in a daze when she quietly said, "I think I killed Detective Wilden."
Hanna just stared momentarily. Did she hear this right? "What? How? What happened?"
"He pulled me over to harass me. He...he threatened you," Ashley explained, her eyes welling up. "So I hit the accelerator...he was reaching for his gun."
For a moment, Hanna wanted to praise her mom. Wilden couldn't keep getting away with abusing his power. At the same time, she knew how the Rosewood PD worked. They've been nothing but trouble. It'd be her mother's word against the PD, basically. Even if it was in self-defense. It sounded like it was to Hanna.
"I need to go back," Ashely said. "I panicked and...I just left."
"Are you sure that's a good idea?"
"I have to do this, Hanna," Ashley said adamantly.
"I'm going with you," Hanna decided. "I'm not letting you do this alone."
When they arrived at the scene of the crime, Wilden's police car was still there, the lights flashing. Other than the car, there were no other signs of Wilden.
"Mom, where is he?" Hanna asked slowly.
Ashley was bewildered. "I don't know."
Maybe he got up and walked away. Maybe he wasn't hurt too badly? But why would his car still be here?
It was at that moment that she got an S.O.S. message from both Aria and Emily. Hanna usually dropped everything when she got a message like that. Right now, though, she had to ignore it. She couldn't leave her mom like this. Especially when she was ready to turn herself in.
For now, Hanna talked her out of it. Again, she understood how the police in this town worked. It was both inept and corrupt. "Let's just figure things out first, okay? We'll look into what happened to Wilden. He could be fine."
Maybe it wasn't the right advice after all. But Hanna couldn't chance trusting the police. She couldn't lose her mom. That would surely be her breaking point.
One thing was for sure. Hanna, and likely Ashley, too, was not getting much sleep tonight.
She was afraid of whatever news her friends had for her. That was tomorrow's worry.
