Hanna had been home since last night. Her mom had good news for once. Sort of.
Wilden was apparently very much alive. Ashley had seen him. So had Ted, her boyfriend. She hadn't been hallucinating when she saw him last weekend. He made his presence known, clearly an effort to unnerve her. He hadn't been threatening. He was just there. Hanna felt relief for her mother, who'd been agonizingly guilting over what she had done.
He didn't seem to want to press charges or anything. That was probably because he knew he'd been wrong to abuse his power the way he did. Whatever. Hanna was staying home for a few days. She didn't want to run into him. She knew he wasn't going to be quiet about this for long.
The other reason she was here was for cake. A birthday cake specifically. Her momand her player forgot about it on Thursday. She had a lot of stress and other distractions. She more than made up for it with the cake and presents last night. Right now, they were both consuming left over cake and coffee.
"I'm supposed to go to New York this week for a seminar. I could get a promotion," Ashley explained. "But after everything that happened lately, I think I should stay here."
"No," Hanna said adamantly. "You should go, Mom. You don't even have Wilden to worry about. You can't give up on a chance for a promotion. Besides, it means you'd have to move there. Away from all this mess."
Away from Rosewood. Hanna didn't see a downside to that...other than leaving her friends. She could visit them anytime. She was already doing that now from a a few states away.
"I'll think about it..."
"No thinking," Hanna declared. "I make my best decisions when I don't think about them."
Which is probably why most of her decisions had been disasters.
Ashley smiled. "We'll see. Now, eat your cake."
"Thanks, Mom," Hanna said. "For all of this."
It was implied that it was more than the cake and birthday presents she was talking about. It was also about how she'd done everything to protect her, no matter what.
Hanna was lucky she had one parent who wanted to celebrate her birthday.
She didn't even think about her father once.
