Rosewood, Pennsylvania - Tuesday

Hanna hated Tuesdays. Everyone seemed to know she didn't have classes, and they always demanded her attention on those days. This time, it was her mother. Hanna was pretty sure this wasn't going to be a happy family time visit.
She was right about that. As soon as Hanna entered the kitchen late in the morning, Ashley was in detective mode. She had been cleaning dishes, which she abandoned when she saw her daughter. She held up the police report from when Hanna was arrested for shoplifting. "Who sent this to Mona?"
Hanna blinked. "What? Where did you get that?"
"Mona gave it to me. She was concerned because someone was using it to blackmail her. She thought I should know," Ashley explained. "And I'm glad she told me."
Hanna kind of wanted to strangle Mona right now. "She shouldn't have."
"Well she did. I went to Wilden with this, thinking he had something to do with it. Scare you into a confession to something," Ashley explained.
"You went to Wilden?! You can't do that!" Hanna exclaimed. "Are you two, like, together again or..."
"God no," Ashley replied, wrinkling her nose. "Never again...don't change the subject I want to know who this 'A' is. Are you being bullied?"
"No! I mean...I don't know who it is." That was the truth.
"You have one more chance to tell me about this police report," Ashley said authoritatively.
"I already told you..."
"What you want to tell me," Ashley said. More forcefully, she added, "I'm asking you for the rest. Who it came from. And why."
Hanna wanted so badly to tell her everything. For a second, she considered it. It was a long second followed by silence.
Ashley sighed in exasperation. "Fine. You need to give me your phone."
"What..."
"If you're not gonna give me any answers, I'm gonna have to go looking for them myself."
Hanna glared. "Did Wilden ask you to.."
"No!" Ashley interrupted. "This isn't about Wilden. This is about you and me! I'm trying to help you!"
Ashley moved closer, holding her hand out. "Give it to me."
Hanna couldn't give her mother the phone. There were too many secrets on it, too many dangerous things for her mother to know about. There was only one thing Hanna could think of to do about this.
She walked over to the sink filled with soapy water and tossed her phone into it.
"I'm outta here," Hanna said somewhat callously once that was done. Ashley didn't try to stop her. She was too angry.
As soon as she left the room, Hanna closed her eyes. She felt terrible for doing that to her mother, but she did it to protect her. If she was asking about 'A' that might be too much already. Hanna knew how things with 'A' worked. She had the memory of headlights heading toward her for reference.
Yeah. Hanna was protecting her mother, the most important person in her life.
Since it was lunch time at Rosewood High, Hanna headed over there. She stood outside the window of the cafeteria, waving at her friends (including Mona) to come outside and talk for a moment.
"What are you doing here?" Spencer asked as they wandered over to her.
Hanna explained what just happened with her mom asking too many questions. Mona seemed to feel terrible for involving her mother like that. "I didn't think..."
"Don't worry about it. What's done is done," Hanna said. "What are we going to do? My mom's asking about 'A' now."
"So's my mom," Aria added. "If they figure things out..."
"We're not going to let that happen," Spencer said. "We'll think of something."
Mona raised her hand. "I think I have an idea."
The others waited for her to continue.
"It'll involve telling a really big lie...and I'm not good at that," Mona told them. "Which one of you is best at keeping secrets from someone close?"
Hanna, Emily, and Spencer all pointed at Aria, whose response was being offended. "Really? Wow. Thanks guys."
Aria was leading more of a double life than the others. Those were the facts.
"After school, you tell Mrs. M that you sent the police report to me," Mona explained. "Tell her you were worried about Hanna's problem with sticky fingers, and you were trying to scare her straight. So simple."
Hanna raised an eyebrow. It was actually a pretty good plan. Aria even agreed to it.
"We'll then meet at, say, four at my place," Spencer added. "Sort of regroup."
Hanna agreed. She'd just have to find something to occupy her time until then.
"Do you think she believed you?" Hanna asked Aria when they met up later.
"I don't know," Aria replied. "I hope so. I tried to sell it, you know?"
Mona handed Hanna her old phone. "Figured you might need this. It's old, though, like six months. But you can't, like, live without a cellphone."
"It'd be like going without shoes," Hanna agreed. "Thanks, Mona. You're a life saver."
"I know," Mona replied, grinning. "And it goes to my account, so your mom won't even know."
Mona left the others a few moments later, which was convenient because Aria just got another call from that Jonah guy. "He says he has new information, some address in Brookhaven. Worth checking out?"
"I don't know," Spencer replied. "He ripped us off if you ask me."
"He gave us the information he had," Aria explained. "It's not like he made it up."
"We'll check it out tomorrow," Spencer said. "Hanna, we'll keep you informed."
"Good," Hanna replied just as Spencer's laptop beeped at them. She received an email.
"It's from Caleb. Looks like he got more of the video working."
The girls gathered around, watching the same video from Alison's room the night she was murdered. She was with Ian and Garrett. In a rushed voice, Alison could be heard saying, "She's coming upstairs!"
"Are we about to see Alison get killed?" Hanna asked nervously
That's when Alison's door burst open on the video. "Where is she?!"
It was Melissa, Spencer's sister. All four girls gasped, visibly shocked.
"We need to give this to the cops, like, right now," Aria said.
"I agree," Emily added.
"No...I need to talk to Melissa first," Spencer replied, clearly worried. "We need to find out what she was doing in Alison's room."
"Isn't it obvious?" Emily replied. "She was a part of that night. They were all after Alison."
"You don't know that." Spencer was not ready to listen to reason. "I'm not about to turn in my pregnant sister!"
"I will," Hanna said without any hesitation. "Watch me."
"Hanna!" Spencer shouted. "You asked me not to judge your own mother, and now you're ready to throw my sister behind bars!"
"Your sister has lied to you so many times!" Aria pointed out. "Why are you so quick to defend her now!"
"Maybe if I come clean to her, tell her about this video, she'll..." Spencer, once again, tried to reason.
"She'll come up with a bigger lie," Emily finished.
"Not if she knows what's at stake," Spencer said. "Please, just give me this one night to talk to her."
"Fine. Got to Melissa," said Aria. "I need to get home."
"Spence, talk to her. Now," Hanna commanded. "I'm going back to Fandom. So you don't have to worry about me going to the cops tonight."
Spencer sighed. "Thank you. I promise, I'll get to the bottom of this."
"I hope so," Hanna said, giving her friend a look of sympathy before leaving the room.
It had been a really long day. All Hanna wanted to do was get back to her dorm room and pull her blanket up over her head to hide for awhile. That seemed to be her default reaction to all this insanity.
She never felt safe when she was in Rosewood.
