Hanna couldn't handle the guilt from the argument she had with her mom a few days ago, so she went home to try to make amends. There was also a tiny hidden agenda. She wanted a new phone. One of her own, not an old hand me down from Mona. Never mind that it was only six months old. It was the principle of the thing!
Of course, her mom said no. Hanna expected that. It was deserved. But she pouted anyway. Then she gave her a hug and apologized for being a brat.
After visiting with her mom, Hanna headed over to Spencer's house to find out what the latest 'A' news was. It seemed less and less likely that Melissa was 'A' simply because, according to Spencer, Melissa confessed to sending warning messages to Alison to stay away from Ian, messages she signed with her own name. For now, at least, Melissa was lower on the list of suspects.
There were other things to think about. The new address Jonah gave the girls was a doll hospital in Brookhaven. Just thinking about it made Hanna shudder, especially since there were plans to visit the horrible place tomorrow. Dolls were creepy enough. Broken ones? That was a whole new level.
There was also the bag of Alison's stuff her brother Jason had given to Spencer. She and Emily looked through it earlier, attempting to find clues about 'A' and Alison's murder. They didn't find anything, so Spencer left the bag on Jason's porch.
Hanna noticed a newspaper with a picture of First Lady on the front page, the caption stating she was visiting Philadelphia. "Man, times are tough. Michelle Obama wore this same blouse three years ago."
Spencer curiously reached for the paper. "That's because this is from three years ago. This is the newspaper used to wrap up Alison's stuff in that bag."
That meant Alison likely wrapped them up herself. Spencer looked somewhat grave. "We need to get that bag back. We must have missed something."
Hanna understood, at least enough to head back to Jason's house to find the bag when Spencer asked her to. When she stepped up onto the porch, she realized something seemed...off. The sound of something crashing inside the house was proof of that.
She slowly turned around, glancing through the window. Was that smoke she smelled? And did that glowy orange tint inside the house indicate a fire? She moved closer to the window, jumping back with a horrified gasp when someone pounded on it from the other side before sliding down into possible unconsciousness.
"Jenna?" Jenna who was wearing a bandage over her eye. She must have had surgery in an attempt to restore her eyesight. Hanna wasn't really thinking too much about that, though. She was too busy rushing into the burning house to find Jenna. She may be the enemy, but Hanna wasn't about to let a blind girl burn to death! Hanna might be many things, but she was, at the core, a decent human being.
Hanna couldn't see very well, there was so much smoke. She sputtered and coughed as she searched for Jenna, finally finding her by the window. She reached under Jenna's arms and began to drag her out of the house.
"Hanna!" Spencer rushed to help them, placing one of Jenna's arms around her neck, as Hanna did the same with the other arm. Hanna was coughing almost uncontrollably as Jenna was semi-conscious. They got Jenna a few feet away when the first floor of the house exploded. Hanna stared at the blaze in shock. If she'd been in that house a few more seconds...
She didn't want to think about that. Instead, she and Spencer followed the ambulance that was taking Jenna to the hospital. Emily and Aria met them there soon after. Hanna's mom was there, too.
"What happened? Are you all right?!" Ashley was full of concern.
Hanna rushed over to hug her and reassure her. "I'm fine, I just need to wash my hair. I'm all smokey."
Eventually, all four girls were gathered in Jenna's room. She wanted to talk to them. Apparently, Jenna had gotten a text from Jason to meet him at the house. Aria explained that Jason was in Scranton when the police talked to him. He likely didn't send it. The girls were adamant they did not send it either. Jenna nodded tearfully. Even she couldn't blame them for this. "Hanna, are you there?"
"I'm here," Hanna quietly replied.
"I was told you were the one that dragged me out," Jenna continued. "Is that right?"
"Yeah," Hanna replied. "It was me."
"Why?"
It was such a simple question. Hanna knew the answer. She wasn't going to leave a blind girl behind, no matter how volatile their history was. It was that history that made it difficult to express that answer. She gave a simple response instead.
"You're welcome," she said before walking out of the room.
The rest of the night was spent in Spencer's room to read through newspapers from 2009. Highlighted messages seemed to imply Alison and 'A' were communicating with each other through the use of newspaper ads. They weren't quite there, yet, but they seemed to move one step closer to learning the identity of 'A.'
Hanna just wanted to sleep. It had been another long night because 'A' decided to become a pyromaniac. It certainly didn't seem like an accident.
