Rosewood, Pennsylvania - Saturday

It was a nice evening in Rosewood after major storms the night before. Hanna's vow to never return wasn't exactly the most rational one. She never could stay away from her friends for very long.
Right now, Rosewood was still reeling from the news that one of it's own police officers was suspected of murdering Alison. Plus, being a small town and all, nearly everyone knew Hanna and her friends as those girls who knew Alison...and those girls who were harassed by the psychotic girl who called herself 'A.' All four of them had gotten random text messages from jerks claiming to be 'A.' But Hanna knew that people could be terrible. That was nothing new.
They took their minds off it all by helping move Emily from Aria's place back into her old house. Since her dad had been deployed back to Afghanistan, her mom had no reason to stay in Texas. So she and Emily returned to their Rosewood home.
Now, they were at the Apple Rose Grill after moving a few boxes. Everything leading up to the move had been a good distraction for Emily. Not only was her dad in a foreign and dangerous place, but Maya was still missing, presumably a runaway. It had not been an easy time for Emily lately. Preparations to move took her mind off things for at least a few hours.
"God, don't they have anything better to do?" Hanna sighed as she caught a glimpse of a nosy woman staring at them from across the restaurant.
"We'll be old news soon," Spencer said. "Try to ignore it."
Hanna shrugged, taking Spencer's advice. So she changed the subject. "So Em, you must be so glad you're mom's back, huh?"
"Totally," Emily replied, smiling. "Though she'll be upset we ate here tonight. I know she's been dying to cook a big meal. We should let her sometime."
"No objections from me," Spencer added, chuckling. "It's not like either of my parents are chefs of the year."
Emily laughed. "Well good. My mom will be pleased."
They left the restaurant not long after, opting to walk back to Emily's house to help her set up her old room. As they got closer to the house, they were shocked to see flashing lights. Were those police cars up ahead?
"What's going on?" Aria asked, catching a glance of the lights.
Emily didn't answer. She was too busy running ahead of the others in a panic as an ambulance sped by them toward her house. Hanna glanced at the others, her eyes wide. They said nothing. They just followed Emily, expecting the worst.
Yellow police tape was never a good thing. Hanna knew that. The coroner's van was an even worse indication that something had gone terribly wrong. Hanna's first thought was that something happened to Emily's mom.
But, as the girls caught up to Emily, they saw that Mrs. Fields was very much alive. Though she looked extremely grim.
"Honey," Mrs. Fields began, reaching for Emily's hand. "They found a body..."
Hanna assumed she meant the movers. Not only was Emily moving her stuff back in, but all the furniture needed to be, too. It made sense. Not that anything involving police crime scene tape made sense, really.
Mrs. Fields tearfully looked at her daughter. "They think it's...it's Maya..."
Spencer, closest to Emily, quickly held onto her to prevent her from falling from the sheer grief. Hanna and Aria immediately clung to Emily as well. Emily was nearly hysterical as a stretcher with a body bag was wheeled away toward the van. It was just like the night Alison's body had been found.
Emily's devastation was palpable. The other three were crying right along with her.
Hanna felt helpless as she watched one of her best friends sob uncontrollably. Hadn't Emily been through enough? How were they supposed to help her get through this?
[nfb, nfi; also, warning for character death and sadness and...gah, I've been dreading this update; finally posting the cliffhanger-ish ending from the season two finale since season three starts on Tuesday]
